A device designed by VECTOR BLUE HUB, an IP-RF signal modulator, marketed as ROTON, has been recognized by the Polish Institute of Industrial Design as one of the most innovative Polish design solutions presented at the exhibition of 25 Polish Design Process Success Stories.

ROTON - IP-RF signal modulator design

The exhibition of the award-winning products was held under the prestigious Design-Business-Profit project, run by the Polish Institute of Industrial Design. Held under the new Design-Business-Profit initiative, the exhibition showcased 25 products made by Polish businesses that are examples of a model implementation of a design process. The results of each of these implementations are not just about aesthetics or cutting-edge appearance, but most of all about technological innovation. The design solutions presented under this project were selected by the experts and curators of the Polish Institute of Industrial Design. The presented design innovations included a product designed by VECTOR BLUE HUB.

How good mechanical design can solve heat dissipation problems

An important challenge of hardware design was to solve the device’s cooling issues. This primarily followed from the requirements set for the device’s casing for the team in charge of the electronics design. The high density of the electronic components, packed into 4 boards and the 2 power supplies, generated a lot of heat.

Moreover, the environment in which the device usually operates compounds this problem. Such solutions are mounted in large server rooms, in telecommunications cabinets. They work next to a lot of other equipment, above or below it, that also generates large amounts of heat. The answer to these problems was to design an openwork front-panel to guarantee the dissipation of a considerable amount of heat produced by the modulator.

The design of the front-panel took account of the need to quickly take it apart to have access to the fans that suck out the hot air from the device and easy access to the device’s reset button.

Mechanical design in support of the flexible management of the device’s functionalities

Another challenge was to design a casing to enable flexible and quick module replacement to provide extremely fast modification of the device's functionalities. Our designers have taken those needs into account and the target solution enables module replacement without the need to remove the device from the telecom cabinet. This saves time for the network engineers and reduces the device's downtime.

High availability in product design

The market the device is made for has very high-reliability requirements, known as high availability (HA). High availability is a feature of solutions that are intended to provide very high operational efficiency, understood as fail-safety, which in the case of ICT devices is set at 99.999% ("five nines"). In practice, this means that over a year’s time, the device will be down for only 5.26 minutes.

This requirement was met through measures including implementing two power supplies in the device to obtain a redundant power supply system. In the event the first power supply is unavailable, the second one automatically takes over.
